About Dad (Jack, Grumpa)

Do you remember when Dad would mix crazy combinations on his plate, he said because he liked it, but we all knew it was so he wouldn't have to share it with us!  One time he confessed that this was indeed the reason these weird combinations started.  We, his kids, would always want a taste of what he was eating and he got tired of sharing.  Let's face it...when you have to give 5 or 6 separate bites, there probably isn't much left for yourself.

Favorite weird Dad food:

ketchup and mac & cheese
jelly and cottage cheese - like there was ever a chance we would eat THAT even without the jelly!!

My mind is stuck...

What do you remember?

I remember jam on ice cream--eeew! And mayo AND jam on cottage cheese. Then there was the chocolate syrup in his coke or soda of choice- remember that? It would get this nasty foam on the top of the cup(he would pour it into a white plastic cup).

I remember the mayo with cottage cheese with pepper. I eat that every once in a while and my kids think it's gross but it reminds me of my daddy! And I love peanut butter/mayo/banana sandwiches too! Yum!! I also remember the jelly on icecream and oddly enough, my husband, Kurt, also does that.

Very good ones. Remember his eggs? Always WAY too undercooked. But i used to always eat them anyway! It may be why I cooked my eggs so long now! I'm not sure this one is that weird or gross, cuz now i love it, but he would put peanut butter AND cream cheese on bagels or toast.

As Jay said, EVERYTHING had TONS of pepper on it. The other thing I remembered was a slice of cheese on his apple pie. Also, EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING had to be room temperature. He would make mom so mad cuz he would leave out the ice cream until it was complete mush. (then put jam on it) He would also wait to eat until everyone was done.

I don't know how to add a new topic, so Shelly, feel free to move this to a new topic page. One of the things we used to always give Dad a hard time about was his great "short" cuts, getting lost, bad with directions, etc. I have 1 vague memory of an incident either going to Dodger Stadium or to Tommy burger in LA. It's very vague, and i'm not even sure if it's real!!!

Does anyone remember specific incidents of Dad's "short" cuts??

One time on the way home from the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, very late at night, Dad nearly killed us all by veering onto the correct turnoff at the last minute. By us, I think it was Dave, me, Shelly?? not sure.

Driving to Denny's for work, he'd always go "you can go on that off ramp and it'll get you past the traffic," but we never did it.

On the Oldsmobile trip to Ohio, he drove Shelly and me into downtown St. Louis, the bad part of town, and then started saying "look at all those black people!" and I thought we were going to be jumped for sure. We were looking for something--the right highway turnoff or something? gas? it's fuzzy. I try not to remember little details because that would make me a petty detail person.

and what's with all the weirdo comments after yours, Jay? Did you open the door and let in a virus? The swine flu?

I've been thinking a lot about Dad lately and remembering how he would always make an effort to come to my kids sporting events! It meant so much to me! And then he even came to softball games that Lisa, Jay and I were playing in St George and cheer us on, even though we're old! Ha ha!
